How do you open a captive ball?

I bought a captive ball ring set, to use as an earring. One issue is that my wife nor myself can get it open, and she has one for her labret. Any ideas on how to get it open? Any help is appreciated, I want to wear them for a wedding next weekend. I have a starter barbell in the hole (same gauge) and its time when I can switch it.
