What can I do to make my kitten more friendly?

We got her at around 10 weeks old and she's about 3 months now. We've had her for about 2 weeks. She hid the first day and night but she comes out now and plays and falls asleep on our beds. But she cries non stop when we hold her. She seems a bit of a feral cat to me, because we got her from a man that lived on his own with around 10 cats and a house that smelled of pure tobacco. I felt bad for the other kittens that we didn't take home with us. But since my kitten came from a home like that, she wasn't used to being held or anything. And we want to keep her as a family cat and be able to play AND hold her. Any tips on what i can do?
