4 month old baby sleep pattern tips, and sleeping through the night?

Okay I have been not doing so good with my sons sleep pattern. What can I do. He will wake up 2 times in the night and eat and breastfeeding seems to put him to sleep. I realize I need to stop doing that and somehow get him to learn to put himself to sleep. Also I use a pacifier aswell. What steps can I do to help him sleep through the night and not use these "crutches" to fall asleep. Should I let him cry out for a little bit?
